The drywall, taping and sanding gets done in record time. Grant and Adam from Grant Taylor's Contracting are real pros.

Adam adds a second coat to the workshop walls.

And then they complete all the painting. We chose a beautiful white for all the walls and trim (called 'Here Comes the Bride'), and a pretty mauve (Gypsy Caravan) for the bathroom walls and ceiling. We kind of laughed at ourselves because initially, we had planned to do the painting and trim work ourselves.

Oh my word... what were we thinking?! First of all, we have a business to run and our clients come first, AND we're in the process of networking and building our circle of business connections in a new province. Secondly, this space is BIG – it would have taken us weeks to do what Grant and Adam did in a couple days! Thankfully, Risser's were able to book them to complete the work – we think we may have crushed Grant's packed schedule but... in true Maritime style, he smiled, and did an amazing job! They used sprayers, and 2 coats later, the finish is smooth and perfect.

And one last note about the paint... Grant suggested adding a strengthener to the paint in the garage and workshop - it will make it more durable. Nice! Didn't know you could do that!

Fall weather has been quite lovely. A lot warmer than we were used to in Calgary. And the colours are so pretty, but it's the sunsets each night that continue to amaze us – often orange, yellow, pink and mauve. Wow! The sun has moved around and it now sets directly across the cove from us.

We finally got a dock builder to come round for an assessment! Travis from Millenium – really friendly guy and he had some great ideas! He's going to give us a quote and hopefully we can schedule him in early Spring to build us a wharf and floating dock! We have valuable waterfront property that we want to enjoy more fully next year and for years to come... and be able to drop our kayaks in easily.

Quite pleased with the yield from our test garden. We had several batches of tomatoes that we roasted for sauces and as it got cooler at night, I finally harvested all the green tomatoes.

I discovered that Green Tomato Chow (or Chow Chow) is a thing here... so I made some!

Now we need to make fish cakes to try it out in true Maritime fashion!

And then the tilers are here! Nicole and Bernd Krebes are an awesome, hard-working team (who incidentally own BernArt Maze which just won the Mobius Award!)

I felt so bad when they were partly done and we felt the black stripe of tiles was one row too low. They said, 'you have to be happy, so we will change it'. So awesome and now it's perfect. Love the vintage-inspired basketweave floor (Alan chose that!) and isn't the mauve colour pretty?

They also did the hearth for the wood stove in a gorgeous slate tile, and the same tile in the laundry room is ready for grout soon...

This is our hardwood flooring acclimatizing:

As planned, the beams are being built for the studio. Ryan came up to our office one day with a board of several stains to choose from, with a piece of our hardwood in hand to match. It took Alan and I all of 5 minutes to make a decision. We are so thankful that we have the same taste, and we know what we like (well, we chose each other didn't we? LOL)

So the beams are coming along and our studio is one big workshop at the moment. Ryan puts the core of the beams up and then the wood used to create the boxes are stained, then assembled.

This is where all the trim is being painted for windows and doors as well.

Our studio is making for a great work space.

Monday, October 28 and the last phase of the power upgrade is happening. The power was off for most of the day which allowed me to get some much-needed filing done. Adam, from Honneyman Electrical put in the new 200amp panel and a new mast was added which had to go above our roof for code. Kind of ugly but necessary, and when we paint the exterior of the house, this will all blend in. Nova Scotia power came back to connect the wires and we had power again.

We have noticed that all summer and now into the fall, the afternoon light hits our new build right where the courtyard will be. Next year, when we have finished the courtyard with a pergola and firepit, it's going to be so lovely. But right now, this fall weather has inspired comfort food...

No one makes a better mac n' cheese than Alan!

Alan has been super busy and it's so satisfying to know that it really doesn't matter where we are located, we can deliver high quality work. He is currently working on 3D animation projects for clients in Los Angeles, Monrovia, Ontario and Calgary. And I just started working with a client in BC.

We also placed a small ad on a Social Media post that Simple Local Life puts out each week. It's an ad for our Food Photography business – we had such great success in Calgary and we've been wanting to get going on some projects here. Happy to report that we got a response in the first week! A good meeting followed and we're hopeful to land our first project here. So exciting!

With the electrical done, lights start appearing inside the build.... let there be light!!!

October 30th and everyone is here! Rhyno's are finishing the install of the heat pumps and there is a lot to do. First of all, removing the old furnace and oil tank from our basement. Not an easy task since the oil tank is still half full. We tried to sell the tank, oil and furnace on Kijiji but the buyer didn't want the oil (and it's quite unsafe to transport...), so it had to be emptied. Thankfully, Rhyno's provides this service.

We hated having to dispose of the oil but at least we sold the furnace and tank to someone who needed it. We've had terrific luck with Kijiji - when we were moving and now, anytime we need to sell something, we always get a buyer.

Finishing details continue... Adam installs the outdoor lights and they are a lot nicer than I expected them to be; modern with a nod to nautical which we really like. They detect nighttime and come on automatically – which is a good thing since its pitch black out here at night.

The trim details are really nice too... I didn't expect ledges on all the windows (great!), and the trim around all the doors and windows is nice and wide.

So, at the end of October, a lot has been done and the finishing phase is on.

Here are all our bathroom fixtures in waiting... bathroom in a box!

The tiling will get finished this week we think and for now, Alan's workshop is a tile-cutting room; they have a nice view at least!

We're really looking forward to getting all the storage out of our house and moved into the workshop, garage, laundry/mudroom and studio.

We'll gain quite a bit of space in the house soon.

The beginning of November marks the last month of this build and they look to be right on track. We broke ground on June 24th and it's so hard to believe that all of this has been accomplished in just over 4 months and will be finished in 5. Now that's a well-organized contractor! Barrett and Melissa Risser and their entire team have just been fantastic!

And so, it's the 4th of November tomorrow… a very sad and difficult day for me and my family. It was 30 years ago on Nov 4, 1989 that I lost my mom. Hard to believe so much time has gone by… all the stages of our lives that we’ve missed having her with us. My mom was only 49 when she chose to end her life… she had struggled with depression and tragedy all her life. When someone in your family dies of suicide, you are left with the feeling that there must have been something you could have done or said to prevent it and it’s a very difficult thing to live with. There is much better awareness of mental illness now than there was 30 years ago, but I rarely mention how my mom died… I can see that it makes people feel uncomfortable and they just don't know what to say. As a society we are still not very good at talking about death and dying, and it’s so difficult to understand all the complexities of mental illness... and be empathetic.

Anyway, I dedicate this blog to my mom, Shirley Jean, who I miss with all my heart. I know she would have been so thrilled for me – finding such happiness with Alan and making this dream come true.

One of the things we really love to do is take a road trip. We pack up the car with snacks, water, a cooler bag, hiking boots, beach chairs and outerwear to cover anything (it's the same here as in Alberta – you just never know what you might get for weather)... and with a loose plan in mind, off we go.

And so it was that we set off for a tour of the wine region on September 21, what would have been my mom's 79th birthday (I always like to do something fun on her birthday in her memory), and headed across the province, this time on Hwy 12, to Kentville, and then on to Blomidon Winery. A very pretty part of this province, situated on Minas Basin part of the Bay of Fundy and... that amazing red earth.

Discovered a lovely Baco Noir wine here. Yes, Nova Scotia does have some nice wines!

I can't get used to this red! It's fantastic and so different from the ocean side where we live.

It was a gorgeous day – warm and sunny for the first day of fall and the drive was beautiful – red cliffs, orchards, vineyards, rolling hills and farms. We stopped at Gaspereau Vineyards for lunch and what a great choice!

Lobster sliders. Yes please!! We sat outside surrounded by the vineyard... just lovely and the food was excellent. We each had a different white wine and they were both so good we bought a bottle of each.

After that deliciousness, we drove on to Luckett – very busy and popular with wine tours... they have an old English phone booth in the middle of the vineyard that you can call anywhere in North America for free... pretty fun!

Our next stop was Avondale Winery – they were having a garlic festival... it was very busy, so we didn't stay long. However, the vineyard looked lovely and we've heard that the restaurant is good, so we'll be back.

Our last stop was at an orchard for some apples and pears. Delicious!

Nothing better than apples right from the tree!

September 23 was a big day on the build – the garage doors were installed which meant we were now closed in! There is a single garage door on the workshop and a nice big door on the garage. SGM Garage Doors did a beautiful job and explained to us how to keep the seals in good shape. Alan and I have NEVER had a decent garage in any home we've lived in – they always seem to be left unfinished with ill-fitting doors... so this is going to be so nice. We'll be able to open the shop garage door to work in the courtyard on projects.. it's all happening just as we've planned.

AND... drum roll please... the shingles were finished! Pretty sure the guys were right sick of that job! But it looks so beautiful!! Thanks Chris, Ryan, Kyle and the rest of the Risser crew! You all did such an amazing job.

As September came to a close, we marvelled at the warm autumn weather and beautiful colours on the trees! We felt bad for our friends in Calgary when we heard that they were getting a snowstorm and we remembered those September snow storms that would end a very short fall in a hurry...

The view of our cove is always changing and always beautiful... at least to us.

Something fun came up for me... I saw that the Lumberjacks Hockey Team were looking for someone to sing the National Anthem, so I offered. There is a regular singer and I could fill in when she can't make it! I've sang 3 times now – the toughest part is remembering 'IN ALL OF US COMMAND'. It's a great opportunity for me as an aspiring singer to work on adding power to my voice and getting in front of an audience – its so fun to sing with the team and referees on the ice ready to go... I hope I get to do it more.

I knew my lumberjack shirt (from Kicking Horse Ski Resort, BC) would come in handy!

On Saturday September 28 we experienced something really unique – the Scarecrow Festival in Mahone Bay. What a great added bonus this lovely little town has been for us ... before we moved here we had visited Lunenburg, but we were not aware of this pretty town made famous by it's Three Churches. Now, it's become one of our favourite places. I think there were something like 250 scarecrows – so imaginative and really fun! Here are just a couple of favourites:

Had lunch on the patio at the very sweet 1860 Kitchen + Public House – very pretty... and delicious food! Their pergola is exactly what we want to build for our courtyard!

A project for the Spring! A pergola for our courtyard - we even want the same Edison lightbulb-style lights!

We've been trying to get a wharf consultation... no luck. Either the companies are too busy and booked up, or they just don't show up! I even put a request out on Lunenburg Bulletin Board... no shows... if anyone knows of a good wharf builder we'd really like to talk to them! We have some riverfront property begging for a proper wharf!

October 1st, I celebrated 17 years as an independent company (est. Oct 2002) by going to a great business summit at Oak Island Conference Centre.

There were 2 highlights for me: the first was a presentation by Don Bureaux, the president of NSCC in Halifax. It was so inspiring – how Nova Scotia is changing and innovative... and people like Alan and I are part of that change, bringing expertise and enterprise to this province, and how geography matters less... check out onens.ca to find out about the amazing work Don is involved with. The second highlight was Sickboy Podcast - these guys were also really inspiring; they've created a series of podcasts that deal with illness, death and dying – subjects that most people are so uncomfortable to talk about, they handle with an incredible sense of vulnerability, authenticity and humour! The whole day was really great, inspiring and a great opportunity for some good networking.

On October 5th, Alan and I decided to check out the entirety of our property! Something we hadn't done yet... hard to believe but true, but it's 17 acres and we've been a little busy. Wow! We have a dense forest back there - it feels so untouched and wild...

Just a small sampling of the huge variety of funghi in our woods.

We are now members of the Western Woodlot Services Cooperative, a non-profit organization that comes in and assesses your woods; basically they will help us to be good woodlot owners, doing what's best for the trees and all vegetation... very cool organization and we're looking forward to being able to access our property with some great trails eventually.

The weather continues to be beautiful... we're still walking on the beach as often as we can get there... maybe we'll be doing this all winter too?

Beautiful Hirtles Beach. We're not swimming anymore, but it's still lovely.

October 7th and the start of another busy week... first of all, a new pole is installed by Nova Scotia Power, necessary for us to upgrade our power to 200 amp. And all the insulation is getting done!

The drywall is starting too but we have another road trip to do! A few months ago, I heard about Celtic Colours - a music festival happening on Cape Breton Island. Neither Alan or I have ever seen the Cabot Trail, so we booked in for the Thanksgiving weekend. We travelled up to Antigonish - a pretty university town... and then across the Canso Causeway to Cape Breton Island! The colours were beautiful and we made our way to our first hotel - Glenora Distillery.

The tour was great, interesting – this is the oldest single malt whiskey distillery in North America. We enjoyed a great tasting in the bar and enjoyed some celtic music after dinner. The Glenora is a beautiful place to stay – really nice modern rooms. It was a great first day of our trip!

We started the next day with a stop at Inverness Beach. Beautiful.

Love beach grass, boats in the little harbour and the lobster traps getting ready for the upcoming season.

That picture of me in the beach grass? That's my Maritime commercial shot LOL

And then the Cabot Trail... well, each of these photos deserves full width size, so enjoy...

We had an overcast day but it was still incredible. I wanted to stop every two minutes...

Our second night was booked at the Keltic Lodge. What an incredible location - right out on a point of land with ocean on both sides.

We checked in and did a nice little hike out to the point – lovely ocean views and Ingonish Beach is off to one side. It's a great old building with hardwood floors everywhere BUT, and it's a big but... the food is quite terrible, and for foodies like us, it was a big disappointment. They have 2 big, uninspiring dining rooms, very limited wine list... they actually had a buffet for dinner (we hate buffets) in one of the dining rooms – and it was not good. Another buffet for breakfast, no menu options. And the entertainment was one guy with a guitar in this huge ballroom with a tiny bar at one end. Really disappointing and I can tell you, TripAdvisor got some scathing reviews from me. We won't be staying there again until we hear that things have drastically changed.

The next morning, we set out again to finish the Cabot Trail and make our way to Baddeck.

It started to rain and at times it was pouring, but it was still beautiful and sometimes the mist over the water was lovely. We drove down the coast and through Wreck Cove and took a sweet little ferry at Englishtown. We decided to drive to Sydney and had a fantastic lunch at Governor's Pub. It was pouring, but we could see that it was a charming city.

After lunch , we drove along the big Bras D'Or Lake, and made it to Baddeck in the late afternoon. Baddeck is a really sweet town! Super charming! We booked in to the Lynwood Inn and discovered that the Parish Hall where we wanted to go to a Celilidh was right across the street! Perfect.

We felt like pizza and if you're in Baddeck, we recommend Tom's Pizza – excellent homemade crust and really good. and a bonus: live entertainment! Rob MacLean was playing – good guitarist and singer and we sang songs and had an excellent time. We talked to him afterwards about playing in our studio next year – we'll keep in touch!

We had tickets to the Ceilidh though, so we had to leave. Gillian Head and Adam Young were playing traditional Cape Breton music - we had front row seats and it was super fun! Gillian even did some step dancing and there was a round of square dancing... great time!

Lovely stay at the Lynwood Inn... so quiet and cozy.

The next morning we walked through town and found an excellent spot for breakfast, The Freight Shed, right down at the dock. There is a lighthouse in the harbour and lovely old buildings in town.

We decided to drive home along the Eastern Shore – so glad we did. We came across some fantastic old abandoned boats... well, I LOVE taking photos of old boats.

The name of this boat is Penny Lane III. As big Beatles fans, I think we need to get a big canvas print done.

And this one was interesting too... there is such a sense of wonder about old boats – the stories they could tell.

Back home and things are progressing nicely! After the Thanksgiving Weekend, our drywall was finished and the taping and mudding has been completed.

Grant and Adam from Grant Taylor's Contracting are doing an amazing job – we are not surprised... all the contractors that Risser's has brought in have all been topnotch.

Grant doing his magic!

It's an exciting process and now we're looking forward to getting heat and electricity in the place!

Updated: Jul 20, 2023

On Friday August 30, we had a terrific meeting with an engineer working as a consultant and basically, all of his clients are potential clients for us – industrial companies and manufacturers. In true maritime fashion, he was super friendly; had checked out our website, knew what our expertise was and we chatted about business and potential leads for an hour and a half. We really appreciated the introduction from Bernice Williams, who had interviewed me a few weeks ago. Slowly, we are increasing our business network with a great collection of people.

That night, we enjoyed another fantastic concert at Petite Riviere Winery. Unfortunately, it was the start of the long weekend and the attendance was low, but From Away were pros and gave us a full-on concert. Loved it! It was another beautiful night, overlooking the vineyard with super dark skies... really lovely. Afterwards we talked to them about coming to play in our studio once it's finished. They are from Ottawa, so the next time they are in Nova Scotia, we'll definitely book them in. This is the level of talent we are on the hunt for:

On Saturday, we started our day with a beautiful morning paddle of our cove – it was perfectly calm and so pretty.

On Sunday, we took a little drive at low tide to find a sand spit near Oxner's Beach – very lovely and a bit of a secret.

On the holiday Monday, our friend Deirdre from Dartmouth came for a visit – it was so nice to enjoy some time together, and Alan made a delicious steak dinner on the Green Egg. Many moons ago, we all went to the same high school in Williamstown, On (shout-out to all our Char-Lan friends!) so it's been really nice to reconnect and see each other more. Deirdre is the ONLY person we knew in NS when we moved here. LOL

A short week was upon us and it was a crazy 'Mondayish kind of Tuesday', so after work we went to Crescent Beach for a lovely walk. There were so many shore birds and I wished I had my Nikon – if you walk slowly, you can get quite close to them. Nothing like a walk on the beach to let the stress of the day just slip away. We enjoyed a nice beach dinner picnic as the sun was setting and as we drove home, the sunset kept getting more and more intense. Almost every evening, there is a pretty yellow light that bathes the landscape and when you drive along the river, it hits the old fishing shacks and boats – really lovely –there is often incredible orange, pinks and reds in the sky. And of course, reflected on the water, it's even more intense.

And then the drywall arrived and was loaded in through the upstairs window. Now I understand why that window has not been put in yet. It's almost like it was all planned :)

And then an exciting stage of the process happened... early morning and another large truck has arrived - this time it's a pumper truck and the cement floor is being poured!

I could not believe how quickly it was done and within hours a couple guys were in there on pads, tamping it down, levelling it off... and then polishing it! Amazing. I thought it would take days to set. And a good thing it didn't take too long because Hurricane Dorian was on it's way.

It's rather disconcerting when you see on a satellite map that the eye of a hurricane is headed straight for you! Alan and I had no idea what to expect but we assumed we would at least lose our power. So, on September 4th, we made a trip to Canadian Tire to prepare ourselves the best we could. We loaded up on water containers, batteries, candles and a Coleman stove.

Friday the 6th, the crew managed to get the last big window in for the studio. We all knew what was coming, and they wanted to seal up that big open space before it hit. Finally, all our big beautiful windows were in. They dedicated the rest of the day to securing our site – moving all the lumber and supplies inside, securing the scaffolding and adding strapping to the roof since we didn't have the metal on yet. We added all our kayaks, fire pit and other outdoor items for safe keeping. We were a bit worried about our big trees in front of our house but... we just hoped for the best.

All the openings were boarded up with plywood. The guys left for the day and we all wished each other well, 'we'll see you after the storm'. That night we filled the car with gas, got some cash, filled both bathtubs with water, filled the containers with water, set-up the camp stove and kept our eye on the weather report.

Saturday morning it was overcast and started to rain. Barrett came by to check the site and make sure everything was secure. We appreciated that. It was our first hurricane and we have this half-finished building that we've invested our money in... kind of nerve-wracking. Around 12:30 I was practicing my flute when we lost our power. It was raining pretty hard at this point, but not much wind, so I just kept playing. Why not? The entire afternoon it poured rain, and the wind started to pick up. We noticed that our neighbour Russ was staying out on his boat, Tillicum – the beautiful 2-masted schooner that sits in our cove – well, we couldn't blame him, he was looking after his investment. Through the evening we would notice that he kept changing the position to best handle the wind. It must have been a very long night for him. The wind really whipped up overnight, but our old house was solid as a rock – we hardly felt the wind.

We woke the next morning to a windy but sunny day. We got our boots on and went out to check out our land and the build... fingers crossed that everything would be fine. One little corner of the roofing paper had lifted. A bunch of small branches were down. And nothing else. Wow.

Alan made a terrific pancake breakfast on our camp stove and we settled in for a day without power. I love this video... it doesn't matter what Alan has to cook on, he always makes a fantastic meal. Lucky girl I am.

So we settled in for a quiet, powerless day. Kind of freeing actually. We could still use our phones but had to charge them in the car. I wanted to see the waves at the beach, so in the afternoon we headed to Hirtles, but as we neared the ocean, we saw more and more damage – trees completely uprooted and some flooding... we suddenly felt like we were imposing on their privacy, so we turned around and headed home, feeling so lucky to have no damage. We have this big rise of land behind us where our woods are and the wind actually came from that direction, so it protected us from the full force. We're also in a cove – we're not exposed to a big body of water, and that helped as well. It seems that we chose a great property.

We cooked up stuff from the freezer on our great little camp stove, read, played instruments, had a nice long nap – it was quite nice.

On Monday morning, at the regular 7:30 start, the guys were here. None of them had power at their own homes either, but here they were, on time and back at work. Impressive. The build was opened up, all the stuff taken out and work continued on. They were working on the shingles which didn't require power, so that was good... later, a generator was brought in, and work continued. With no power, we packed up our computers and headed to a hotel in the late afternoon – it was nice to have a shower and we spent the next 2 days there with quite a good office set-up.

We popped down to the house on Tuesday night and the power was back on! So, the next morning we came home, cleaned out the fridge and got ourselves organized again to resume normal life.

Things really stepped up since September 11 once we had power again... more and more trades started to arrive: plumbing, electrical, HVAC...

On the evening of the 12th, we decided to pop over to Mahone Bay and try Rebecca's Restaurant. Well first of all, what an amazing location! The restaurant is situated right on the Bay with a perfect view of the 3 churches. We got there just as the light was pink and reflecting on the calm water. I thought it would be fantastic to come back here and sit on their patio for lunch. The food was fantastic! We are new fans!

On Friday, September 13, we attended the Chamber of Commerce meeting and Glenn Carey, the Director of Business Development for the South Shore Lumberjacks Junior A hockey team was there, and we ended up with a pair of free tickets to the game that night! And what great hockey! Well, we are really starting to feel like locals now... we came out of the arena to a full, bright moon. Gorgeous.

The start of another week and it has been crazy on the building site! Adam from Honneyman Electical has been here all week, putting in all the wiring, and sockets; we've been making decisions about where outlets, lights and fans will go...

That's Adam in the middle of the room... and Alan is talking to Craig from Rhyno's deciding on where the thermostat should go. These details are all important to us.

Allison, Craig and Arthur from Rhyno's have also been here all week – they've been installing our heat pumps and all the ducting. Allison has the distinction of being the first woman on site! Yay Allison! We need more women in the trades – if I wasn't doing what I do, I think I'd love to be on a building site. It must be really satisfying work.

Ryan with the Risser's crew has been building our stairs. What a big change to suddenly have stairs! We've been climbing the ladder for weeks. Alan designed them 4' wide and they feel so grand –a great entrance up to the studio.

We've been out choosing bathroom fixtures, deciding on tiles and flooring and choosing lights and fans - there is so much to do. We also had a chance to meet with Glenn from the Lumberjacks for coffee at King St. Beer Company (The Barn has a set-up there in the morning) – we wanted to brainstorm about marketing ideas for the hockey team and see where we could fit in. It's important for us to continue to expand our network. so, we'll see what we get up to with him over time...

Thursday, September 19th was another big day. They started putting the metal on the roof. And the colour is perfect! Wow, it looks good.

The next day, they continued with the metal and almost the whole roof is done already! We're going to do the house in the same metal, but not sure if that's going to happen soon or if it will have to wait. The focus is on getting the new addition closed in.

A month or so ago, Barrett had to tell us that the colour we wanted was not available, but when I suggested that he try another supplier, he immediately did and that afternoon, he had found the charcoal grey that I had my heart set on. That's a good contractor don't you think? I mean, the roof is a big part of the look and I really didn't want to settle for a lighter grey. We are so thankful for the Rissers - they have just been amazing to work with.

The Rhyno's crew stayed late on Friday to finish up the install for the heat pumps. We have one dedicated to the new addition and one for the house.

It's nearing the end of summer and we decided to go to Lunenburg for possibly a patio dinner... and then I said something that made us truly feel like locals: "oh look, the Bluenose II is home!" That gave me shivers... there it was, 15 minutes from our home... looking so beautiful in the warm yellow setting sun.

It's the start of another weekend and the last day of summer... we're off on another road trip to explore more of this beautiful province!
